20MnCr5 STEEL

Grade Brief

20MnCr5 for hard surfaces and tough cores.

20MnCr5 is a low-alloy engineering case-hardening steel developed for components that require high core tensile strength together with a hard, wear-resistant surface after case hardening.

The grade can be carburised and subsequently heat treated to produce a high-hardness surface while retaining a tough and shock-resistant core. It is commonly used for demanding mechanical and automotive components.

  • Case hardening capability for a hard surface and ductile core
  • High surface hardness and wear resistance after carburising
  • Good machinability in the annealed condition
  • Weldable with suitable preheating and post-weld treatment
  • Core tensile strength of 1000 – 1300 N/mm²
