SAE 8620 STEEL
SAE 8620 for case hardening, strength and wear resistance.
SAE 8620 is a low-alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case-hardening steel. It is generally supplied in the as-rolled condition and offers a combination of high external strength, good internal strength, wear resistance and toughness.
SAE 8620 is particularly suitable for components requiring a hard, wear-resistant surface together with a tough and strong core. Its low carbon content makes it well suited for carburizing and subsequent heat treatment.
- Excellent case-hardening response
- High surface hardness after carburizing
- Good core strength and toughness
- Good wear resistance
- Suitable for gears, shafts, pins and automotive components

Controlled treatment for case-hardened performance.
| Process | Temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annealing | 820 – 850 °C | Heat until temperature is uniform throughout the section and cool in the furnace or air cool. |
| Normalizing | 910 °C | Air cool. Normalizing may be used to improve machinability and prior to case hardening. |
| Carburizing | 900 – 930 °C | Carburize in a suitable carburizing medium to develop the required hardened case. |
| Hardening | 840 – 870 °C | Austenitize and quench in oil or water depending on section size and component geometry. |
| Tempering | 200 – 700 °C | Temper heat-treated components according to the required combination of hardness, strength and toughness. |
| Stress Relieving | 630 – 650 °C | Hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, soak for approximately 1 hour per 25 mm section and cool in still air. |
