SAE 8620 STEEL

Grade Introduction

SAE 8620 for case hardening, strength and wear resistance.

SAE 8620 is a low-alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case-hardening steel. It is generally supplied in the as-rolled condition and offers a combination of high external strength, good internal strength, wear resistance and toughness.

SAE 8620 is particularly suitable for components requiring a hard, wear-resistant surface together with a tough and strong core. Its low carbon content makes it well suited for carburizing and subsequent heat treatment.

  • Excellent case-hardening response
  • High surface hardness after carburizing
  • Good core strength and toughness
  • Good wear resistance
  • Suitable for gears, shafts, pins and automotive components

Hardening 840 – 870 °C Austenitize and quench in oil or water depending on section size and component geometry.
Tempering 200 – 700 °C Temper heat-treated components according to the required combination of hardness, strength and toughness.
Stress Relieving 630 – 650 °C Hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, soak for approximately 1 hour per 25 mm section and cool in still air.
Application

Built for demanding applications.

Automotive Components: Gears, camshafts, crankshafts, chain pins and other transmission components.

Industrial Applications: Bushes, pins, shafts, rollers, fasteners and machine components requiring a hard wear-resistant surface with a tough core.

Engineering Applications: Components requiring a combination of surface hardness, wear resistance, toughness and core strength.
Conclusion

SAE 8620 for wear resistance and tough core strength.

SAE 8620 is a low-alloy nickel-chromium-molybdenum case-hardening steel that provides an effective combination of a hard, wear-resistant surface and a strong, tough core. Its carburizing response and reliable heat-treatment characteristics make it suitable for gears, camshafts, pins, shafts, fasteners and other automotive and industrial components where durability and resistance to wear are required.
